STATEHOUSE: Friday, July 29, 2016 – Well respected among West Virginia progressives, Charlotte Jean Pritt‘s name will now appear on West Virginia’s 2016 ballot as the Mountain Party’s nominee for the state’s top Executive Office. Drafted to run at the Mountain Party’s recent 2016 Convention, Pritt now tops an impressive slate of people’s candidates.

With regards to the state’s lawmaking and budget-making processes, Pritt is clearly the most experienced candidate for 2016 governor. During her many years serving in both chambers of the statehouse, she also was widely recognized as one of West Virginia’s most progressive legislators, earning many awards for her votes and sponsorship of bills that promoted economic, social, and environmental justice statewide. See more details regarding Charlotte’s phenomenal life as a public servant and lawmaker at this link.

This is not Charlotte Pritt’s first run for the office of WV Governor. Over twenty years ago, she challenged two major Party candidates who each were focused on promoting an unsustainable mono-economy for the State. After handily defeating coal broker Joe Manchin (Enersystems), former coal broker Cecil Underwood (Princess Coal) narrowly defeated Pritt after Underwood’s Republican Party (along with a group calling itself “Democrats for Underwood”) poured record amounts of corporate funds into a vicious statewide media blitz loaded with lies and half-truths.

Over a decade later, Pritt switched from lifelong Democrat to the Mountain Party mainly because our Party Platform is more aligned with Charlotte’s own vision of how the State should be governed. From 2012 to 2014, Charlotte served as Mountain Party Executive Chair.

In addition to Pritt, the following candidates will also be on WV’s 2016 general election ballot appearing on the Mountain Party ticket.

  • MICHAEL SHARLEY – WV Attorney General, (Morgantown)
  • BRUCE BREUNINGER – WV Senate District 11 (Richwood):
  • RODNEY HYTONEN WV House of Delegates – District 7 (Pennsboro)
  • ELIZABETH RHULE WV House of Delegates – District 36 (Charleston)
  • CHRIS REED – WV House of DelegatesDistrict 39 (Charleston)
  • ALAN BALOGH,– WV House of DelegatesDistrict 43 (Hillsboro)
  • BARBARA DANIELS House of DelegatesDistrict 44 (Richwood)

In the true grassroots spirit, the Mountain Party is West Virginia’s only Major Political Party maintaining full ballot access that chooses to endorse qualified candidates who are running on other Party tickets. The following candidates who sought, and received, the endorsement of the Mountain Party based on their individual public support of the 2016 Mountain Party Platform are:

  • Mike Manypenny – 1st US Congressional District
  • Mark Hunt – 2nd US Congressional District
  • Matt Detch – 3rd US Congressional District
  • Mary Ann Claytor – State Auditor
  • Mike Pushkin – WV House 37th District -Kanawha County
  • Melissa Riggs Huffman- WV House 40th District -Kanawha County
  • Cat Webster – WV House 59th District – Berkeley County (part), Morgan (part)
  • Sammi Brown – WV House 65th District – Jefferson County (part)

The WV Mountain Party’s national affiliation with the Green Party grants the Green Party automatic ballot access to West Virginia’s general election. In exchange, the Mountain Party can name delegates to the Green Party Convention. The duly registered voting delegates at this year’s Mountain Party Convention chose to support Jill Stein of the Green Party for U.S. Presidential nominee at the Green Party’s upcoming nominating convention in Houston, Texas, primarily because her Platform is so closely aligned with our own.

Mountain Party Drafts Charlotte Pritt for Governor

Mountain Party Drafts Charlotte Pritt for Governor

On Saturday, July 16, Delegates to the WV Mountain Party 2016 Convention in Bridgeport, WV, unanimously nominated Charlotte Pritt as the Party choice for governor. Pritt, who had neither pre-announced her candidacy, nor campaigned prior to the Convention, was apparently caught off-guard by the Draft. Pritt nonetheless accepted the unanimous vote of the Convention Delegates, and will lead the Mountain Party ticket on West Virginia’s 2016 ballot.
